What to watch for with nutrition during pregnancy
Pregnancy is a time when we pay a little more attention to nutrition. The goal is not to set strict rules, but to meet the needs of both mother and baby in a balanced way. The points below are general; anything specific to you should be assessed together with the doctor following your pregnancy.
Variety and balance
Rather than leaning on a single food, a varied and balanced table meets most needs naturally. Spreading vegetables, fruit, whole grains, protein and dairy across the day is a good start.
Folic acid, iron, calcium
Some nutrient needs rise during pregnancy. Whether these are needed as supplements, and at what dose, is your doctor's decision. Adding supplements on your own is not the right approach.
A few things to be careful with
It helps to be cautious with raw or undercooked meat, unpasteurized dairy and too much caffeine. When in doubt, asking your doctor is the safest option.
Gaining weight is normal
Gaining weight within a healthy range is natural during pregnancy. What matters is keeping it in balance, not restricting it. In pregnancy nutrition consulting, we plan this in line with your doctor's advice.
